Quatrième de couverture

!!!

The joint cultivation of different species of plants (annuals or perennials) is ary common throughout the world. Such cultivation is seen in topical as well as Mediterranean zones, and even in temperate climates.

This book highlights the importance and the effects of microclimate iodifications when different species are grown together in the same area. lt amonstrates the significance of these practices and the positive character of certain combinations vis-à-vis yields, weed competition, attacks by arasites etc. It is necessary that the combinations be carefully selected to reclude adverse affects on the environment. This work has been conceived oth as an instruction manual as well as a textbook referenbe for data (often very difficult to obtain) on the interactions of climate and combinations of ultivated plants whose growth requirements are different.

Biographie

!!!

Baldy, agronomist, doctor of engineering, doctor of sciences, director of INRA research on bioclimatology, has concerned himself for more than thirty years with the relation between climatological factors and various ystems of cultivation in the Mediterranean Basin and in various tropical and ubtropical areas. His book 'The Agrometeorology of Arid and Semi-Arid legions' (in French) was published by INRA in 1986.

J. Stigter holds a degree in experimental physics and is a doctor of gricultural sciences. He was a Professor of Agricultural Physics for nine ears in Tanzania. He is presently a guest scientist at the Agricultural Jniversity of Wageningen, The Netherlands, from where he has been directing the TTMI research education programme for over ten years now. As part of that programme he is a visiting professor at four African iniversities. From 1988 to 1993, in six visits, he gave many lectures, first as ubject consultant and then as Key consultant for the establishment of the Centre for Advanced Studies in Agricultural Meteorology (CASAM) in Pune, India. He is currently (since 1991) the President of the World Mèteorological ) Organisation's Technical Commission for Agricultural Meteorology.
