André Cottavoz

Passionné dès son enfance par la peinture, André Cottavoz, né en 1922, est admis à l'école des Beaux-Arts de Lyon en 1939. Il se fait remarquer très tôt après la guerre en participant à des salons et à des expositions de groupe, avant de recevoir, en 1953, le prix Félix Fénéon, qui le fait connaître du grand public et contribuera à sa notoriété à l'étranger, notamment aux États-Unis et au Japon.
Les thèmes principaux chez Cottavoz sont inspirés par les êtres et les choses qui lui sont chers et qui l'impressionnent. Dans son processus créatif, l'artiste considère la lumière comme une qualité fondamentale de la matière qui l'engendre, ce qui le conduit à travailler dans une pâte généreuse qu'il sculpte avec un plaisir évident.
L'installation définitive dans le Midi à partir de 1962, renouvelle l'inspiration de Cottavoz, qui retranscrit sur la toile, le papier ou l'argile, l'éclat du ciel et sa palette de lumière, la mer, les jardins méditerranéens et les corps féminins...

A painting enthusiast from his early childhood, André Cottavoz, born in 1922, was a successful candidate at the « École des Beaux-Arts » of Lyon in 1939. Soon after the war, he drew attention to himself by taking part in « salons » and collective exhibitions. In 1953, he won the Félix Fénéon prize, which made him known to the general audience and helped him to reach a wider audience abroad, particularly in the United-States and in Japan.
The things and the people he loves and that impress him inspire Cottavoz's main themes. In his creative process, he considers light as a fundamental quality of the matter that generates it, and thus, he works with important amounts of « raw materials » that he sculpts with obvious pleasure.
Cottavoz's permanent move to the South of France in 1962 renewed his inspiration. He transcribed on canvas, paper or clay, the brightness of the sky, with its whole palette of light, the sea, Mediterranean gardens and the beauty of women...
