Belgium, a mosaic of various cultures, is not easy to describe. The originality of this 236-page book, illustrated with 220 photographs, lies in its unusual method of exploring this country through two different perspectives.
It is impossible to understand the Belgium of today without knowing about its complex past : in the first section of the book the reader learns of the great historical events and the great cultural currents over the millennia by regarding the most evocative monuments and sites. The second section emphasizes the variety and wealth of the various regions of Belgium by means of large panoramas or by exploring little known sites that can be visited by the public.

Het is niet mogelijk het heden van België fe begrijpen zonder in zijn zo ingewikkeld verleden te duiken : in een eerste deel doorkruist de lezer de belangrijkste fasen van de geschiedenis van het land en zijn grote culturele stromingen vanuit de monumenten en de plaatsen die de meeste herinneringen oproepen. Het tweede deel van het boek benadrukt de variëteit en de rijkdom van de verschillende streken van België, van ruime panorama's tot minder gekende plaatsen die toch binnen ieders bereik liggen.

Vincent Merckx attache une grande importance à la précision du cadrage, à une riche palette de couleurs et à la lumière la plus appro-priée. Ce qui exige le repérage préalable de chaque sujet et impose souvent d'y retourner maintes fois. Afin d'obtenir la finesse maximale du détail avec un matériel aisé à transporter, toutes ses photographies sont prises avec des appareils de moyen format 4,5 x 6,6 x 9 et 6 x 12 cm avec trépied, sur des films de faible sensibilité.
Vincent Merckx publie ses photos dans la collection d'albums produits par sa maison d'édition.
Agrégé en Histoire, Georges-Henri Dumont a été membre du Conseil exécutif de l'UNESCO de 1981 à 1989. Il préside actuellement au sein de cette organisation la Commission Internationale Scientifique et, à ce titre, supervise l'édition de la monumentale Histoire du Développement scientifique et culturel de l'Humanité, (History of Humanity, Scientific and Cultural Development).
Parmi ses nombreux ouvrages, plusieurs touchent à l'histoire des XVII Provinces - les anciens Pays-Bas bourguignons puis espagnols - ainsi qu'à la période qui suivit l'indépendance du Luxembourg et de la Belgique. Son essai sur Léopold II a reçu le grand prix de la biographie de l'Académie française.
The photographs of Vincent Merckx, often panoramic, cover nearly the entire historic heritage and the landscape of Belgium and Luxembourg.
Vincent Merckx attaches a great deal of importance to the meticulous centring of his photos, to the richness of the colour palette, and to the most appropriate sunlight. This has demanded numerous scouting trips to choose settings for each subject and often many return trips. In order to obtain the maximum sharpness of detail with easily transported equipment all his photos were taken with medium sized cameras of 4.5 x 6, 6 x 9 and 6 x 12 cm with tripod, on film of low sensitivity.
His photographs illustrate the series of books produced by the publishing house that bears his name : Vincent Merckx Editions.
Georges-Henri Dumont, Emeritus Professor of History, was a member of the Executive Council of UNESCO from 1981 to 1989. At present he chairs the International Scientific Commission of this body and as such supervises the edition of the monumental History of Humanity, Scientific and Cultural Development.
Several of his many works deal with the history of the Seventeen Provinces - the former Burgundian and then Spanish Low Countries - as well as the period following the independence of Luxembourg and Belgium. His essay on Leopold II received the Grand Prize for biography from the French Academy.

Dit betekent dat hij vooraf elk onderwerp ter plaatse moet bestuderen en bijgevolg vaak moet terugkeren. Om elk detail zo scherp mogelijk weer te geven met makkelijk te dragen materiaal, werden al zijn foto's gemaakt met middelgrote toestellen 4,5 x 6, 6 x 9 et 6 x 12 cm op statief, en films met een lage gevoeligheid.
Vincent Merckx publiceert zijn foto's in de collectie boeken die zijn uitgeverij produceert.
Georges-Henri Dumont is geaggregeerde in de geschiedenis en was van 1981 tot 1989 lid van de uitvoerende raad van de Unesco. Hij is momenteel voorzitter van de Internationale Wetenschappelijke Commissie en houdt, in die hoedanigheid, toezicht op de uitgave van de monumentale Geschiedenis van de mensheid : wetenschappelijke en culturele ontwikkeling (History of Humanity, Scientific and Cultural Development).

Grobêtaen Wert legt Vincent Merckx auf eine präzise Bildeinstellung, eine reiche Farbpalette und optimale Lichtverhältnisse. Dies erfordert die vorherige Erkundung eines jeden Objekts und bedeutet, dass der Fotograf häufig viele Male dorthin zurückkehren muss. Um mit einem leicht zu transportierenden Material die bestmögliche Feinheit des Objekts zu erreichen, werden alle Fotografien mit Apparaten mittleren Formats (4,5 x 6, 6 x 9 und 6 x 12 cm) mit Stativ auf Filmen mit geringer Empfindlichkeit aufgenommen.
Vincent Merckx veröffentlicht seine Fotos in der von seinem Verlagshaus herausgegeben Bildbandsammlung.
