British tanks in Normandy
Quatrième de couverture
In order to redress this injustice, which is too often repeated, it was necessary to pay the British combatants the tribute they deserve for their major part in the battle of Normandy. Moreover, the study of the British armoured units in Normandy is particularly interesting, for the diversity of the equipment they used as well as for their constant confrontation with the "elite" Panzer-Divisionen.
This book is intended to provide the military history enthusiast, and the military modeller, with a general view of all the historical, technical, tactical and human information in order to understand the Normandy campaignas experienced on the British side, and especially within the armoured forces. The first part is dedicated to the history of each of the British armoured units during the summer of 1944, and to their participation in the limited operations or large-scale offensives. Precise and complete technical notices, supplemented with about thirty colour profiles, enable every type of tank or specialized armour used in Normandy to be identified.
Finally, the last part deals with themes that were less often considered in previous historical works : the tactics and organization of the British armoured units, and the daily life of the tank crewmen. The latter chapter is too often neglected, although it is in my opinion essential to gain a good impression of the real Normandy campaign.
The memoirs of the veterans who published their story are the main sources of information, and the enthusiast is encouraged to read these books, several of which are mentioned in the bibliography.
