Cap-Martin
architecture beside the sea
Quatrième de couverture
The Riviera hilltop village of Roquebrune underwent dramatic changes when the enormous wooded tongue of land of Cap Martin became a kind of aristocratic annexe of Menton at the start of the 19th century. Sumptuous villas, lush parks with their exotic-smelling plants, beautiful jagged rocks plunging down to the sea, ancient olive trees... this is where the design pioneer Eileen Gray, and later Le Corbusier chose to build their dream "retreats". E 1027, the Maison en bord de mer, and Le Corbusier's Cabanon and Unités de Camping are unique examples of the new architecture between the world wars.
