Avec Let the Sun Beheaded Be (Soleil cou coupé), le photographe Gregory Halpern explore l'archipel franco-caribéen de la Guadeloupe. La série, réalisée durant plusieurs mois, associe vie et mort, nature et culture, beauté et décadence, à travers d'énigmatiques images en couleurs de ses habitants, des paysages luxuriants de l'archipel, ainsi que ses monuments rapportant la brutalité de son passé. Les photographies d'Halpern, bien qu'ancrées dans la réalité, abordent une dimension onirique. Un essai du commissaire Clément Chéroux et une conversation avec l'artiste ainsi que le photographe et écrivain Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa examinent la méthode d'Halpern, son histoire personnelle, et les politiques de représentation.

In Let the Sun Beheaded Be, photographer Gregory Halpern explores the French Caribbean archipelago of Guadeloupe. The series, shot over several months, commingles life and death, nature and culture, and beauty and decay in enigmatic color images of the archipelago's residents and lush landscape, as well as monuments related to the brutality of its past. Halpern's photographs are grounded in reality, but they edge toward the dreamlike. An essay by curator Clément Chéroux and a conversation between the artist and Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa consider Halpern's process and personal history, as well as the politics of representation.
