Quatrième de couverture

According to Barbara Rose, curator of Painting After Postmodernism I Belgium-USA, the artists in this exhibition strive to restore tactility to painting, redefine drawing as part of the pictorial, and go beyond Postmodernism using new techniques and materials to retrieve the fullness of painting as a major art that can hold its own with the masterpieces of the past.

Barbara Rose was educated at Smith College and at the Université Paris-Sorbonne, and holds a Ph.D. in Art History from Columbia University. She was Regents Professor at University of California, San Diego. She has also taught at Yale University, Sarah Lawrence College, University of California, Irvine, American University, and the Università di Torino. She is a member of the Accademia di Belle Arti Pietro Vanucci in Perugia and the Association Internationale des critiques d'art. Twice winner of the College Art Association Mather Award for Distinguished Art Criticism, she received a Fulbright Fellowship to Spain, where she later curated exhibitions at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, and the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno. As Senior Curator of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, she organized many international exhibitions, including Miró in America. She curated exhibitions of Claes Oldenburg, Patrick Henry Bruce, and Lee Krasner for The Museum of Modern Art of New York. Her essays have appeared in catalogues published by the Centre national d'art et de culture Georges-Pompidou, the Musee d'art moderne de la ville de Paris, The Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York, and the Museo Nacional del Prado, among many others. She served as contributing editor of the Partisan Review, Art International, Artforum, ARTS, and Art in America, as well as Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Art. Currently she is working on a book on the relationship between Mozarabic manuscripts and modern art based on recent research done as a fellow at The Morgan Library.
