Secrets, legends and mysteries of Old Paris
Paris is an old city, a very old city and, as you stroll through its streets, you would never guess that a modern building replaced a Gothic church built over a Merovingian basilica which replaced a temple dedicated to one of the gods of the Ancient Romans. Luckily, we still have drawings and engravings of days gone by, some of them linked to legends. And what legends! Stories of a crime that set tongues wagging, a ghost that upset the tranquillity of an entire district, a hide-out used by vicious murders or famous lovers.
This invisible network of strange or curious stories adds a sometimes surprising touch to historic buildings that we may not know as well as we think we do.
Patrick Hemmler is a former student of the Ecole du Louvre. He is, though, more than an art historian; he also loves walking through Paris, fascinated by its buildings, streets and gardens. It is this fascination that he shares with you in this book, by taking you on walks that contain the unexpected.
