Quatrième de couverture

The last letters (letters about a work)

« The tool we are working with is not the foot but the brain. This sequence of letters clearly shows its inner workings. This is not a surrealistic experiment or a description of phenomena that are more or less medical in nature. There is a goal to be reached : the description of a work that is sharp and publicly known. How, when faced with extremely dire conditions, can this be achieved ? »
André Cadere

Biographie

André Cadere was at the forefront of the French conceptual art scene of the 1970s. His « round bars of wood » made him famous : these minimalistic artworks he produced also stood as tools he used for his artistic interventions. In 1978, between May 19 and July 3, while he was convalescing and a few weeks before his death, André Cadere wrote forty-three letters that he gave to Parisian gallerist, Yvon Lambert. This publication, which stands as the third and final text written by the artist about his oeuvre, offers an invaluable account of Cadere's thoughts and practices.
